Germany drafts bill to tax bitcoin gains like stock profits
No clear lean
Removes a tax perk, but only a proposal so far
What happened
Right now in Germany, if you hold bitcoin for over a year, any profit you make when you sell it is tax-free. A new draft bill would change that, taxing crypto gains more like stock market gains instead of giving them special treatment.
Why it matters
If it passes, German bitcoin holders could owe taxes on profits they previously wouldn't have, which changes the math on when to sell, but it's still just a draft, not law yet.
Should I do anything?
Nothing urgent to do here. This is early-stage legislation, so it could change a lot before it becomes real law, and even then it would mainly matter for German taxpayers.
Terms used
- capital gains
- The profit you make when you sell something for more than you paid for it
